Web Master website design offer web design services – of course….
But what is a website – and what is web design?
Sounds like a silly question – but actually it’s quite a good one, and the answer really depends on who you ask the question to.
If you ask a flash web designer, or a website design company who prefer to work with flash, they’ll more than likely tell you that web design is about impressing people with breath taking imagery & animation…
If you ask a large web design agency this question – you’ll probably get a very long winded & technical answer, words such as “visitor experience” and “setting expectations” and “presenting your brand” and so on, will probably be used - you’ll probably be left forgetting what the question was…. and with a big invoice….
If you ask this question to a big company who have an online presence, they’ll talk about branding & marketing, presenting the brand, pr – but secretly the person you asked the question to may well walk of scratching his or her head thinking “What a dumb question!”
But it’s not a dumb question – it’ an important one.
Our answer, is that for small businesses at least, a website is a sales tool. It’s your 24/7/365 sales rep who will never take time off sick, ask for a raise, go on holiday or sue you for something…
Web design, in our opinion, is the art & science of crafting something which looks good, which gives the right impression about your business – which says the right things about your products & services so that people are inspired to take action, and which encourages people to take action – such as purchasing your products online, making an enquiry, booking an appointment or requesting a sample.
If you’re a small business, you need more sales, more clients, more enquiries, and you need fewer costs, fewer labourious tasks to complete which could be automated - your website should deliver all of the above.
You’ll see so many websites which look nice, but which are just doing no good for the business, as they have been designed only with design in mind – or with an approach which suits larger businesses. For example, a large company who’s products are plastered all over the TV, will be concerned mainly about branding – not so much about converting visitors into customers – but for the vast majority of small businesses, a web site which looks nice but doesn’t convert well – is practically useless.
Also – many websites are not built with search engine friendliness in mind, and decisions are often made to put design ahead of search engine traffic. Over use of flash, flash navigation, frames, overuse of text embedded in images – and a whole host of other issues which will inhibit the success of a website in terms of free targeted search engine traffic.
As a website is a sales tool – it needs traffic. The search engines (especially Google, providing over 80% of search engine traffic on average) provide a constant source of FREE and super high targeted traffic, so – not putting a lot of focus on search engine friendliness when building a website – is complete madness if you’re designing a small business website.
